History

The Petigru Review (TPR) is named after James Petigru, an atypical South Carolinian who publicly opposed secession in 1860 and fought for the rights of Black people.

As such, we are not your typical literary magazine. Our goal is to showcase good writing from South Carolina and the world, opening our doors and welcoming all to submit. We offer submission waivers, and when there is funding, a modest honoraria to authors and artists accepted for publication, and we nominate for awards and share the work published on social media as part of our mission to be inclusive and relevant.

We have received support and funding from the South Carolina Writers Association and various arts organizations, such as SC Humanities and the SC Arts Commission, for which we are deeply grateful. SCWA membership is open to writers from around the world and offers events and critique groups for all. You can read about our connection here.
