Stop the Clock

At fourteen
I lost faith in men

when my father told me
he’d be back.

All he left
was his golden clock.

It sat on the living room shelf
ringing by the hour.

For six years
I watched its pendulum

swing left to right
singing to my ears.

Even years after I left
that clock will not stop

until he returns.
