{"id":3381,"date":"2025-10-27T11:37:39","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T15:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepetigrureview.com\/?p=3381"},"modified":"2025-10-27T11:37:39","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T15:37:39","slug":"i-think-i-hate-charleston-adkins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepetigrureview.com\/?p=3381","title":{"rendered":"I think I hate Charleston\u2014"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by Patrick Adkins<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>it turned me bitter to the taste of lakewater,<br>flattened my love for even weather,<br>killed Charlie Hall and left his ghost<br>wandering the green screen,<br>while the meteorologist lies<br>with the same face he used in church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charleston is a mean trick:<br>made me despise Maryland crab cakes<br>just to come crawling back<br>for a cracked blue shell,<br>the soft molted ones,<br>the delicate, defenseless ones<br>whose backs burst like promises\u2014<br>offered up to the river gods of Wando,<br>those scaled oracles,<br>who return the favor<br>by curling their tails<br>into fry baskets,<br>feeding the low-country faithful<br>like communion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hate how Charleston taught me<br>not to fear the wilderness,<br>how to dance with a hurricane\u2014<br>pressed to the sheetrock,<br>while God, that old carnie,<br>grins and slaps the button<br>on the Gravitron of the mid-Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It confused my body into longing:<br>for salt behind the ears,<br>for pluff mud caked<br>beneath the nails,<br>between the toes,<br>a perfume of mildew and memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and<br>Bushee Park,<br>where the Cooper splits clean through\u2014<br>a delta of blood,<br>of runoff and regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hate how everybody loves shrimp and grits now.<br>I hate how they shut down Justine\u2019s.<br>I won\u2019t touch another pecan<br>until I taste her chicken again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick Adkins\u00a0was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina.
