{"id":3189,"date":"2024-09-24T18:04:05","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T22:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepetigrureview.com\/?page_id=3189"},"modified":"2024-09-24T18:04:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T22:04:05","slug":"issue-17-poetry-trew","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thepetigrureview.com\/?page_id=3189","title":{"rendered":"copperhead"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>by Lucinda Trew<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>there have been more than usual this year<br>leafy lawn sightings and close encounters<br>retold on community chat boards, across<br>backyard fences \u2013 copperheads in the \u2018hood<br>leaving fanged gangsta signs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>some say they\u2019ve come for the cicadas<br>aged like fine cheese or wine for 17 years<br>a vintage the viper appreciates \u2013 he is, after all<br>one who can wait<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>tucked beneath tree stumps, sheet metal<br>sheds, hiding in beds of sawdust, biding time<br>without tell-tale rattle or hiss, camouflaged<br>by hourglass bands, he lingers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>stretching time along the endless twine<br>of his spine, coiled like a spinster\u2019s braid<br>like Sisyphus pushing boulders, he pulls<br>tail to arrowhead and back again<br>and again, an interminable stall<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and thrall, hooded eyes slouching<br>to dark and to dream, patiently<br>awaiting the heat of the prey<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucinda Trew lives, writes, and walks dogs in Weddington, North Carolina.
