Central City\n\t\t\nafter Charles Anderson, graphite and charcoal\n\t2015 Top Prize Winner, Artfields, Lake City, SC \n\nIn Joe\u2019s Barbershop,\non the corner of Acline and West Main,\nwe art tourists stay \n\nbehind the yellow ribbon\nso no one gets too close \nto the scissors.\n\nYou smell pomades and powder.\nThey offer a lineup, neck cleanup,\nand a one-blade buzz cut.\n\nThe 7-year-old black boy on the wall \nwill not look you in the eye.\nHe does not want you to see how hurt he is.\n\nI said to a barber in a wheelchair,\n\u201cI was just in Baltimore.\nThis child is what the riots were about.\u201d\n\nHe reached over the yellow ribbon\nand shook my hand.\n\u201cAn excellent analogy,\u201d he said.\n\nAnd it was: the charcoal and graphite on paper,\nthe lost boy,\nthe two hands crossing the line.\n\n\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
