When she \n pulls the doors open:&nbsp; the smells of oil,\n gasoline, sawdust and age;\n I can jump in and sit beside her, just\n she and I while the others sleep,\n down Wooded Hill and across the Four Corners,\n past Saint Andrews and its fine steeple,\n the red brick schoolhouse across from the high school\n toward the North River Bridge through Norwell to the rotary, \n where the sky opens up to the sea and gulls call\n above a row of shops and cafes and bookstores\n to the point where the lighthouse stands,\n has stood at the Atlantic shore through fog and storms\n and ages of lovers, sun burnt families who\n take over the cabins each year. We pull up \n where we always pull up and sit on the bench \n we always sit, out of her purse she hands me \n a wrapped-in-waxed-paper piece of salt water\n taffy we suck on and chew and chew on \n our thoughts until we search for a lucky stone, \n granite wrapped by a white line, on the rocky beach, \n storm-tossed smooth. I kept one she found \n in my pocket, always have, to touch, to feel,\n to remember who I am and where I come from. \n &nbsp; \n\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-layout-grid-column wp-block-jetpack-layout-grid__padding-none\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Richard Stuecker<\/strong> is a poet and writer who graduated from Duke University in 1970.
