Wooden spoons and cast iron<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
 These things are elemental, essential: \n \u00a0\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 bass and drum \n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 May and October \n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 wooden spoons and cast iron. \n \u00a0\n Everything else unnecessary, \n save for the listening. \n \u00a0\n Be patient and rolling hills will write poems, \n flowing waters will read them, \n and winds will scatter \n the verses for all to hear. \n \u00a0\n And your father\u2019s jazz records? \n The ones you have stored \n in his army footlocker with \n the quilt his mother made for you \n when you were born? \n \u00a0\n Take the records out. \n Open the windows on a cool \n Saturday evening in October, \n wrap the ragged quilt \n around yourself again, \n hear the saxophone \n and the swish of a drummer\u2019s brush. \n \u00a0\n As for the quilt \u2013 listen intently and you can hear \n scissors cutting squares of material, \n the gentle click of a thimble, \n the low hiss of sturdy thread being drawn \n through tightly woven cloth. \n \u00a0\n These too are poems \n you do not have to write, \n no less important than those \n of rolling hills and flowing waters, \n their verses as essential as \n \u00a0\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 bass and drum \n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 May and October \n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 wooden spoons and cast iron. \n <\/pre>\n\n\n\n
