After humans gouge out the eyes\nof the last shiny stone,\nafter the mineral guts\nare drilled and dragged from middle earth,\nAfter the drills of technology suck out\nthe last oily slop, and when\n\nevery speck of gold is clutched\nand hoarded, after selling off\nthe last ounce of a necklace\nknown to silver, then\n\nthen after humans slice down\nthe understory stand and rip\ndown the gossamer riggings \nof the web holding up nature's\ncomplexity, then, then after\n\nsuffocating earth with another\nmillion kilometers of paved highways\nand parking lots, sniffing out the last breath\nof grass and leaf, after\n\npumping another ton of poison into \nthe earth with insecticides and\nherbicides, and suicides, adding\ngarbage to the oceans so large,\na new continent born. Then,\n\nlike a wild animal cornered,\nnature will turn its teeth back\nwith growl and claw, cracking\nroads and snapping rails,\nknocking sky-scrapers into rubble\n\nand flooding the Nile, soaking pyramids,\ndrowning Florida's tallest condo at Miami Beach,\nand oceans rise so high, even the Grand\nCanyon will be lost to an inland sea,\n\nthen, then watch our scholars\nflushed with panic, rush through\nthe library doors to research the\nmoldy part about the mythical days\nof Noah and the building of an arc.\n\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
